My pre-k son is asked to share about his culture for a school project. He is the only white boy in his class. Am I supposed to say he’s American or like his 23andme results?

I would say he's american, but if you know when/where your family came to America (if not native) that could be interesting to share. Food that originated from the USA is also interesting (brownies were invented there!) Halloween is also something that originated in North America. I'm Canadian, but I love learning about other cultures and think it's so much fun as a project!

If you don’t know your family’s ethnic background, try something regional instead. I grew up in the Midwest, and my son was born in Iowa, so he’s brought puppy chow and Scotcheroos to school. His classmates in Atlanta had never tried them, but in our house, they’re staples. 😂😂

You can mention that he has (x specific ancestry) but that at home his family celebrates (x American traditions like Christmas, Easter etc) This is because most kids from other nationalities could celebrate different holidays and it will likely come up so his reply will still be cohesive ❤️

Many white Americans think they don’t have a culture but they really do… there’s a lot of white traditions: 1. Thanksgiving 2. Christmas celebrations 3. Fourth of July 4. Halloween 5. Easter egg hunts 6. Baseball games 7. Summer camps 8. Sunday church attendance 9. Weddings with bridal traditions 10. Country music and line dancing 11. New Year’s resolutions 12. Barbecues and cookouts 13. Tailgating at sports events 14. Valentine’s Day celebrations 15. proms and homecoming

I would get together with the other parents and have everyone submit an American flag. I am the child of an immigrant, and my children are children of an immigrant, and we are Americans. The “your country” phrase is insulting.

His cultural background. Where his ancestors long ago were from. Yes the 23 and me results will work. Pick the one with the highest percentage. I’m a teacher

For everyone getting worked up this is the assignment. “The flag and map of my country”. He only knows the American flag and he is proficient at identifying all 50 states. Otherwise I have to pick from English, German, Italian, and idk that he identifies with any of the three unless I pick one for him.

Nothing stopping the US from being your country

Well he can also include where he is from. I once made traditional southern food for cultural day. Culture is more than just ethnicity.

Putting the race aside, what traditions do you/in-laws do for holidays? Do you visit the home countries or celebrate any of their holidays? (I.e. if Spanish, do you celebrate San Fermins day) If your family doesnt, then just say that he's american and that besides the regular holidays there are not many traditions observed in his household.
