Because no accents are. It’s an attempt to be as clear to as many people as possible. No Boston accents, no New York, no California, etc.

They (the South) lost. Hence the power structures (which include broadcasting and how it sounds, looks and feels) were determined by the victor (the North). All part of the same continuum.

It started as classism. It’s why broadcasts started with the transatlantic accent and moved to the midwestern. Now it’s numbers. Contrary to what people might think, the number of Americans with that accent is in the small minority. It’s also why you don’t hear the eastern Massachusetts accent, the Boston accent, Maine Down East, Yooper, Pennsylvania Dutch, etc.

I'm retired now, but passengers on an airplane would hear my announcements in full southern drawl and then ask me to talk more when I came thru the aisle. I got a kick out of it and it was a great way to connect with my customers.

I’d love to hear more Texan accents on air, we’ve got the best of the southern accents

The only thing commonly heard in broadcasting is called "General American" which is a non regional/neutral dialect

Bc America is an empire and if Americans start acknowledging their differences in culture instead of being brainwashed into thinking America is one big unified culture they might realize that trying to control a group of different cultures under the same rule doesn't work bc those different cultures share different beliefs and values and might not have the problems that a different region is having. So basically same shit that happened with the Roman Empire.

Because they refuse to hire if you use. My girls and I were often told to hide the accent. Then some actor puts one on and murders it. 🤦🏼‍♀️

They try and remove any accent from broadcasting so it’s easier for any English speaker to understand
