One thing I wish more writers understood is that hiring a professional editor is not at all like getting a friend or relative to read your work. If your editor goes, “Yep, that’s it — it’s perfect!” and tells you to hit publish, you should probably ask for your money back... Editing is an involved and collaborative process, and it will usually involve a lot of suggestions and feedback about your work. And that's what you're paying for!
