Metric system question: who arbitrarily chose what powers of 10 would be used to measure consumer goods? We never seem to see decimeters (10cm), dekameters (10m), hectometers (100m), and deciliters (1/10L), for example. It's a little bit baffling why people are measured in centimeters and yet motor vehicles are measured in millimeters. I got thinking about this when I found a US-made wooden ruler from the 1960s that was inches on one side and cm/dm on the other. metric system

A persons weight is in kilograms because it usually doesn’t matter if you weigh 75 or 75,3 kg so there is little need for 753 decagram to express 75,3 kilogram, but if it is important, you can use 75.300 grams. In recepies grams, kilograms, milliliters, centiliters, deciliters and liters are common but you’ll still find teaspoons, tablespoons and in Dutch even remnants of the pre-SI era like ‘ons’ (100 gram) reminds a bit of ‘ounce’.
