It has to do with anesthesia. After a certain weight it can be dangerous/fatal. They try not to use it on someone that size unless medically necessary

what?

They can, but only certain surgeons are willing to do it because anasthesia can be dangerous if you have a high body fat %.

They have the right, but the risk of complications, including serious ones, is different. Sometimes it's really better to wait, after all, it's not a life-saving surgery.

I appreciate it's not a bad word, but I'm not totally comfortable with being called fat from someone i dont know. I have a high BMI. But the BMI system is sexist and racist.

That’s what I was wondering too. Much of what we know about fat is biased, random and enforced with shame.

I surely didn’t mean that you were fat! I only meant that some people (including myself) are overweight by a lot more than 4 pounds. Are we not allowed to have top surgery? BTW I have no way to be calling anyone fat, but a lot of folx use the term for themselves. Please accept my apology for the misunderstanding.

I know someone who'd probably be classified as "overweight," although they still eat healthy and exercise fairly regularly, and they had top surgery in the spring of 2022, with no problems, and barely visible scars.
