No offense, but what’s with identifying as a “high-masking autistic”? Is that like continuing to take pride in hiding your autistic traits? I’ve just never understood it.

It's more about noticing the effort masking requires and the toll it has on us. And also noticing the fact that for many people it's not a choice, it's a necessity. Many of us needs to mask to be able to survive, but it comes at a price. We're being vocal about that price.

Cause people get mad if you say higher or lower functioning, so they say higher or lower masking instead. I assure you, being higher masking is NOT taking pride in hiding your autistic traits. It’s a learned defense mechanism because of how weave been treated our whole lives. I’m high masking because my entire childhood, my mother forced me to. It comes from trauma, not pride.
