QUESTION FOR PAEDIATRICIAN THREADS: my kid just started Ritalin. It’s his 6th day & for the past 3 days, it’s like he hasn’t taken anything. Huge meltdowns, no attention span, massive mood swings, impulsivity, and physical aggression. Does this mean it’s not the right medication for him, or should we give it more time? Our Dr said we should see the effects right away. We’re also utilising all suggestions from his psych, OT, and physio. I’m so scared this is another dead end treatment. 😭

Excuse my frankness here but i think if these are normal displays for your kid and not worse then try to give it more time. My partner tried to give each med he tried 2 weeks if he could two and if there were no negative effects during or to stop afterwards. It can take a while before the body is like "huh wait theres a new thing here." Plus- my partners not on it but hes tried a few and said it took him monthes to figure out how to "use the meds" 1/3

You have to watch what you eat/drink with stimulant meds. No acids (soda, OJ, grapefruit; etc.) near taking the pill or it will dissolve in your stomach and be less effective (some people even take an antacid with their meds to prevent this). And you need to eat a good amount of protein in for it to work as well. My medication seemed to work and not work randomly until I realized these things.

Can you try seeing a psychiatrist instead for medication mangement? A psych will be far more informed about the nuances of these medications.

Look into a genesight test. It should be covered by insurance. But essentially they swab the mouth send it off for testing and test medications against your genetics. Thus finding what works best

I wish I could remember the names of all the ADHD medication my son tried before we landed on Adderall. I'm pretty sure we tried Ritalin bc it's such a common medication for ADHD. All the traits you describe was my son WITHOUT medication. And when he tried Ritalin we lasted 2 days on it bc it made everything worse. He was literally sobbing for 20minutes over such a small thing that would normally have him sad but able to move on. 1/2

2/2 with his base behavior already extreme compared to other kids (physical aggression and meltdowns left & right, daily) Ritalin pushed him over the edge of sanity. So, if you're not seeing worsening behavior 'by his standard', you're clear to give it the full ~2 weeks

It took us 2 months to find the right medication for our kiddo (this was when he was 7 yrs old, he's now 9 yrs old and doing so much better 😮‍💨). Hang in there ❤️❤️❤️
