Thank you for this. I was struggling today trying to post something about how my ongoing shock at the worsening rhetoric of the past 9 years would not be possible without the privilege of my white, middle class upbringing. We can't erase previous blindness but we can refuse to shut our eyes again.

Frankly, I think the term "privilege" is a large part of the problem. I understand it's used because it is social science jargon, but the word's meanings in common speech creates misunderstandings. I'm a cishet white guy, grew up poor and abused, and that didn't feel like a "privilege". That said, I know the color of my skin has been an asset during my interactions with police. It shouldn't be, but it is. I'd prefer if it wasn't a factor way one or other for any of us.
