It’s setting up Flash Thompson as Venom. The soldier that gets his legs shredded then gets rushed away, he’s called out by name when someone screams “THOMPSON IS DOWN!”. It leaves it open like in the comics where Venom bonds with him but Brock is still around in the universe to get him back later
