Calves in the beef and dairy industry are disbudded, which involves cutting through or destroying (with chemicals or cauterisation) the living tissue of the horn to prevent future growth.
Why? Because horns can injure workers but also other cows, which affects profitability due to bruising of the ‘product’.
In Australia, if disbudding is done prior to six months of age, there is no legal requirement for pain relief.
