Not everyone is goth, because it is a subculture so there are requirements to label yourself as goth. But since dark clothes/accesories are trending right now ppl label everyone with an edgy or dark style as goth, not knowing that goth is mostly based on politics and music, not only fashion.

my mom was a goth back in the 90s so i kind of just stole her style once i was confident/old enough to wear such clothes, as for the music i grew up listening to some og goth bands (courtesy of my mom once again) so it all sort of fell into place

Um at the time of creation of goth/punk subcultures non-conformity was basic human respect. It was never really about visual non-conformity as the goal, it just was non-conformity at the time because they wanted to be themselves. I am goth bc I follow the beliefs and music, I dress gothic because I love it and it what make me feel my best self. Anyone who’s concerned about looking like or not looking like other alternative people isn’t alternative in my opinion.
