I wonder why it is even contentious! You must park in gear and with a parking break! If the break fails the car won't roll. If only with gear, the car is resting on the transmission, not good. The confusion is mind-boggling, because that's exactly how you park an automatic transmission: car in P, which locks the transmission, and parking break.
