People like that were never joking, they just were not confident enough in owning what utter pieces of shit they were, and used “humor” as way to test the waters and find their people. The “jokes” let them easily disavow it if they found no friends around them, while being a good dogwhistle to attract friends not currently in their circle. But people who do this were always, from the start, very much that person from the start.
