Extreme poverty & constant deprivation does that to people and places. India- the most richest, most beautiful and most culturally rich place in the world was pillaged and plundered for over a 1000 years. The most learned, scholarly and honorable people who lived in spiritual, wholesome communities were punished brutally for being gracious hosts. So much so, they lost their wealth, identity, dignity. Compare what mass immigration has done to beautiful cities in the West, in just a few decades.

While on the subject, please be very careful in Rajasthan in general. It has been rendered very very unsafe due to extremely corrupt and almost borderline feudalistic governance for the past decade or so. Do not go to remote places unless in a large group and be alert.
