There are foreign people "based in Europe" that learned American English. There are people outside of Europe applying to jobs in Europe that use American English.

I had British English during my school years, but get this - we may surround ourselves in different variations of the language, British, American or Aussie - to name the few. Personally I use mix of a those, whatever suits me best, as long as people understand me. Does it matter if I use U or say elevator instead of lift? Don't think so
