Lucille Ball took over and ran Desilu Productions after her divorce. She was approached by Gene Roddenberry with the idea for Star Trek, and she supported the idea of a space western. Two pilots were shot (both with massive budgets), which was highly unusual, but done with her support. Star Trek was eventually picked up by NBC.   A studio accountant was quoted as saying “if it were not for Lucy, there would be no Star Trek today.”
