I keep seeing posts where people advocate that "dude" (or, in Aus, "mate") has no gender.
I'm a woman who frequently gets mistaken for a man depending on what I'm wearing and how long my hair is. I can tell you that there is a subtle but distinct vocabulary shift in the words people use when talking to you and about you depending on what gender they've decided you are.
I'm almost never called "dude" or "mate" unless someone has mistaken me for a man. Especially when a man uses it.
