One part of this talks about Facebook's initial reluctance to build natively for iOS. I was involved in those decisions, so wanted to add a little color.
The Acquired team framed it as "FB hoped HTML5 would just solve everything." A better way to put it is we hoped and expected the mobile browsers to rapidly improve, just as desktop browsers had recently done.
My belief, 15 years on, is that Apple deliberately decided not to do that, rather than that it wasn't possible. 1/2
