I hated it before I knew I was autistic. Now, my current therapist who has helped me with my autism journey is like “I know you don’t like it, but you do have trauma, let’s use it solely for that” so I’m excited to be trying it again how it was intended.

I've had CBT multiple times by multiple therapists before I knew I was ND. It felt like self-gaslighting and was very invalidating. Telling me I was thinking wrong and my thinking influenced my behaviour. Basically telling me all the bullying I received was my own fault.

CBT doesn't work as much on autistic people. Dialectical behavioural therapy works a little better. Also therapists must consider that anxiety in autism often stems from very real trauma and that rethinking the situation won't be a solution as the anxiety stems from something real, not something blown out of proportions. Also exposure therapy is harmful on many levels for autistic people so there's that.

i think, most therapists are going to be allistic or neurotypical and they’ll use cbt to try to treat autistic issues as neurotypical ones; because, there is use in teaching someone to notice when they hold themselves back, but that doesn’t usually come autistic people in mind where some struggles aren’t changeable and need assistance and not a new outlook. it would be like trying to gaslight the autism away.
