Jesus, in typical Jesus fashion, doesn't just answer the question he is asked. He's asked about the greatest commandment and he responds with two commandments. Or does he? (He does, sort of.) His first answer is from Deuteronomy 6, part of the Shema. This is the answer Jesus was supposed to give. It's literally the most famous, most quoted passage from the entire Hebrew Bible. If Jesus said anything else in the series of tests he was being put to, he'd have been cooked. +
