The costs of running the library have to be paid by someone, though. If selling certain goods on the side raises funds that the library can use for its primary services, it reduces the tax burden required to operate. Or alternatively, the library can use those funds to offer additional kinds of services. Profit doesn't need to be the goal for it to be a smart idea.
