Broken color: what is this? Broken color is a stroke that is applied to a canvas/substrate that consists of multiple colors but is not fully mixed. If you carefully observe great painters, you will see a lot of them do NOT fully mix theirs colors before applying their stroke. This technique is advanced and hard to manage, but it does provide variety, sophisticated shifts in color, pattern, and is interesting to look at up close.
