Stopped at a pizza place there on a road trip. A couple of doors down a bar was blasting hardcore metal music. The whole place reeked of anarchy and decay.

The town of Mt Shasta is quaint. It’s a mix of crystal stores and outdoor equipment with a few ok restaurants. It’s easier to get to than Tahoe (traffic moves better) and is a great jumping off point for amazing outdoor expeditions and fly fishing. There’s a redneck element that mixes easily (or seemingly so) with the outdoorsy folks, the spiritual believers, and the crystal lovers. Not sure about Weed but Mt Shasta is lovely.

They intentionally make it difficult to live there. I lived there for most of my 20's, and it's perfect if you're young and you just want to work and hike. If you want to raise a family though, it's better to be a tourist.
