As someone who relocated to Portugal from the US, I’d have to strongly caution anyone looking to move abroad to thoroughly research their choice before making any decisions. It’s not easy under the best of circumstances. I strongly feel that you need to visit first, be a proficient language learner, have a good economic safety net, and realize what you are giving up (social capital, family ties, understanding of “how things are done”). I’m very happy with our choice, but it’s not for everyone.

19 小時內	Elena Wolk elenawolk1	I’m in Germany and agree. It’s definitely hard to move and change your life but you can always go back - worst case. I’d recommend coming with a job if possible to Europe. Job hunting is tough and the salaries are very different.

We have been in Europe now for a few months & really thought we’d choose Portugal, but while there were things we liked, it really wasn’t for us. After Portugal & Spain, we have found Italy to be where we’d like to live. Specifically Sicily. We have an American friend who lives there & connections to find a rental. We will be there to find a rental, sign a lease & then go to US to get our visa. We are retired w/ enough income & have nothing but clothes.
20 小時內	Oliver Clark oliverjclark3	I totally agree. I didn't align with the US (basically all my life) but living in Portugal has eased so many of my anxiety but the process was NOT easy. You have to almost give up all ties to consumerism and commit to a slower, more intentional way of living.

Migration ≠ vacation. I've been here for 23 years, the first couple of which I was undocumented. It was humbling and infuriating, & frankly, a life lesson that would be great for lots of privileged folks to learn, & I chose to migrate. I'm happy about my choice, but it's not easy. It messes with your sense of identity.

Try the U.S. with no English 🤣 Mudei-me para Portugal há três anos e ainda tenho dificuldades com a língua. Mas faz uma enorme diferença para os meus associados portugueses, por isso estou a tentar.
