Black female cashier at Lowe’s asked me how I was doing this evening. I stopped walking. “It’s been…a week.” We made eye contact and she replied with a sigh, “Yeah it has been.” Later when she was ringing me up, there was a lot that I wanted to say. But I was in front of an older white couple who looked like they’d been sucking on lemons all day. I left her with, “I hope it gets better. But we’re gonna make it.” That’s all I could come up with. She nodded and replied, “Yeah we will.” 😞
