I like the distinction between empathy and perspective-taking, which folks don't always intuit. Whatever jargon we use, I want to emphasize: Failure to accurately understand someone's experience is as much or more an error of the mind as it is of the heart. Social skills require cogntlitive competencies. Accurately engaging in perspective-taking, particularly for those who aren't just like you, requires careful reasoning and evidence gathering.
