While 7 was doing her math homework. Her: Is this the right answer? I did it in my head. Me: Yes. If you did it in your head, can't you write down how you did it? Her: No! Because I don't know how I did it! Despite all the changes they've made to how math is taught, "showing your work" still continues to be the bane of school children everywhere.

2 小時內	ktrauzzi	If kids consistently get it right - they know what they are doing. You shouldn't have to show how you figured it out. On the flip side? My side often makes the smallest math mistakes on step 1 of the 10 step process so he gets marks even if his answer is wrong cuz he's doing the correct process. Telling him to slow down doesn't seem to help ;)

Only observing that they're getting the right answer misses the point in terms of what the student is supposed to learn.

I had a student tell me she does division mentally. I sat with her one-on-one and she did everything perfectly, so I just let her do it her way.
