While 7 was doing her math homework. Her: Is this the right answer? I did it in my head. Me: Yes. If you did it in your head, can't you write down how you did it? Her: No! Because I don't know how I did it! Despite all the changes they've made to how math is taught, "showing your work" still continues to be the bane of school children everywhere.

If kids consistently get it right - they know what they are doing. You shouldn't have to show how you figured it out. On the flip side? My side often makes the smallest math mistakes on step 1 of the 10 step process so he gets marks even if his answer is wrong cuz he's doing the correct process. Telling him to slow down doesn't seem to help ;)

Being able to translate one's abstract thoughts into a communicable language is the skill that needs to be practised here. That's why these problems exist. Only observing that they're getting the right answer misses the point in terms of what the student is supposed to learn.

Talk to your daughter’s teacher about it. Normally I like students showing their work, so I can see where their mistakes are and help them correct these. I had a student tell me she does division mentally. I sat with her one-on-one and she did everything perfectly, so I just let her do it her way.

Showing the work is more important than being capable of doing things in the head because we may end up working in teams.

One of the main reasons for “show your working” in maths homework is in case the child just asked Alexa! 🤣

If she now redoes it, showing the work, she. An VERIFY FOR HERSELF if it’s the right answer. If she cannot show the work, she didn’t actually do the problem. The question wasn’t “do you know the answer?” The question was “how do you GET TO the right answer?”

I’m a college professor and I still make my students show their work. It shows understanding, and teaches them how to process things. Also, if they get it wrong, I can usually see where it happened.
