Why did God destroy the tower of Babel? It's not like they would have succeeded in reaching heaven, so there was no real threat to God's kingdom being overrun.

That was the question my 12 yr old asked. I agreed with him that there was no threat to God, but pointed out that the people were putting all this effort into something that was going to take them nowhere, so I asked what are things that we put a lot of time, effort and resources into, that essentially lead nowhere (or that don't bring us any closer to heaven)?

It was more about the fact that man had gotten to a point in their pride where they believed they were greater then God. God, like he does elsewhere in the Bible, humbled them and reminded them of their insignificance before their creator. Also, God had commanded mankind to fill the Earth and they were not doing that.

It wasn’t the building. It wasn’t the tower. It was their motivation, they pride, and their arrogance. That is the reason they were confused.
