Two more New Zealand questions: 1) Why are domestic products generally more expensive than imported products in stores? 2) Why are so many fish & chips shops also Chinese takeaway places? Do they do both fish & chips and Chinese food well?

Q1 is easy, cost of production is high in NZ due to lack of scale.

I can answer 2. I'm an immigrant to NZ around 2000 from Taiwan. Around that time they opened up immigration from Asia, and you get a permanent residency if you can successfully start a company that meets the requirements. Many of my Chinese friends' parents did this exact thing, running small businesses like mechanics, cleaning companies, and restaurants. Though there was a perception that kiwis don't like Chinese food so they made fish'n'chups with Chinese food on the side. (Different times)
