I’m blind so people often assume I’m lost or sometimes people are hostile to my assistance dog being in a workplace. These unfortunately common experiences are frustrating and usually illegal… But this was a university, a public building with a cafe and areas that actively encourage public participation. Yet the immediate assumption was that as a blind person I could not belong, that I couldn’t possibly be a student, work there or even just enjoy visiting. I’m must be in the wrong place.

幾秒內	Amy Kavanagh blondehistorian	The person challenging us was actually a student and we had to get the attention of a security guard to give us directions to the specific location in the campus building we needed. We did then find our colleague and the team at the university welcomed us to the building. But it always reflects poorly on the individual, community, workplace or business when a disabled person is such an anomaly that they’re assumed to be lost rather than a valued colleague, visitor or customer.
