Additionally, there's a lag effect, where even if we halted all emissions today, things would continue to get worse for several years. However, we can and must continue to fight for change. Unfortunately, true change will require a fundamental change to our civilization (e.g., moving away from corporate capitalism, which is a pretty tough sell since corporations and oligarchs own all the media and politicians).
