I became profoundly deaf from meningitis when I was four, but I was raised with an oral approach and never learned to sign. In February of 2020, when I was 50, I lost my vocal speech (and my ability to eat solid food) to cancer. I think the transition was vastly easier for me than it would have been if it were my first experience with disability.
