I agree on a lot of points. But I think we’ve gotten it completely wrong about letting them run amok. Kids need to be out of our yard and house, and going around the neighborhood on adventures without a cell phone. We are deluded into thinking that if a kid doesn’t have a phone they are unsafe. But we do that more for our convenience and feelings of certainty in knowing they are safe than for their well being. Kids being constantly tethered to us has reduced their independence and self esteem.

And also our neighborhoods aren't places where people let kids run around wild, even though we are living in the safest times ever. So even if your kids are old enough to play outside alone or with friends you always have the paranoia that some neighbor will report you.
