As an older gay male, I grew up with the word "queer" as a derogatory remark, and it was used as such in many hateful ways. How did we get from "there-to-here"? Even today when I hear the word "queer" in the gay community I bristle.

Hate that word as an older man. Seems the young like it though.

I’m definitely with you on this one. I hate the word in its LGBT context.

I have said this so many times ! Because we are offended. I hope people stop using it, don’t we older gays matter?

Language is funny like that. The community has reclaimed it to be more appropriate and encompassing the whole LGBTQ spectrum at this point. I'm 38, if anything it's good to see it positively now.

I identify as queer. Even though I grew up with it being considered derogatory, it wasn’t used at me so maybe that is part of it. Queer is a more fluid term and more accurately describes me. But I can understand, as I lived in Boston where they used dyke in the same way. That was probably a more offensive term to me, but they embraced it. Seasons change.
