That was the Red Cross that had a bad reputation. https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/the-lgbtq-community-and-the-salvation-army/#:~:text=We%27re%20motivated%20by%20the,sex%20and%20same%2Dsex%20couples

My father said the same thing. When he and his Shipmates got off their LST in the philippines, he said the Salvation Army was there trying to sell them coffee and donuts for a quarter each. This was World War II. He said they all walked by it and after they got further in on the island the Red Cross was there giving out sandwiches and drinks for free.

That was the Red Cross. The Red Cross charged, not The Salvation Army

My grandfather said this too and never gave to the Red Cross for the same exact reason. They charged his brother for breakfast and coffee when he was a soldier in ww2 and he never gave them a dime again I haven’t either.

That’s interesting. I remember my Father telling me that when he came back home to San Francisco after WW2, the Salvation Army were the ones who helped him and he never forgot it.

I thought that was the red cross who charged for coffee and water later to disaster victims not the salvation army

My Dad felt the same way about the Red Cross, said the SA gave them cigarettes and Red Cross charged.
