Random person: Why do some gay people use the term "queer?" It's derogatory. Me: Sincere question or another transphobic attempt to divide the LGBTQIA+ community?

That is the heart of the issue, isn’t it?

People have been reclaiming slurs as long as people have been calling people slurs.

I have always understood it to be like when black people use the N-word or even gay people and the f- word. It’s reclaiming something used in a derogatory way to strip the word and its absuers of the power behind it.

Bc it creates unity and communities. Also i don't want to explain to anyone I don't want to date what Pansexual means.

I use queer because it is a lot simpler than going into the whole mess of explaining my gender and sexual fluidity, especially to people who have no right to know those details. I definitely understand that some folks may be opposed to the use of queer, and respect people when they request that I do not use the term in reference to them. But I will (and have) throw shade at people who try to police me for using queer in reference to myself.

i’m my mind, gay is a sexual orientation (MLM), same as lesbian, bisexual, etc.. but queer is used to define all “gayness”, i personally am not a massive fan of everyone just saying they’re gay, especially women, if i see someone say they’re “gay” i assume they mean MLM, as i myself am a gay (trans) man

personally i don't like queer, i think it's fine if you are, but i think because of the controversy around it it should be "the lgbt community" rather than "the queer community". queer was used as a slur for a very long time and i think it's unfair to be excluding the generations that fought so hard for us to have the rights and lives we do.

Maybe because it’s the “in thing” to do these days ? Long ago, being called queer was not the most pleasant of things yet nowadays it’s ok to use the word so there will be a generation that finds it derogatory and is not an attempt to divide any community. In fact, I can’t even understand why this would be seen as a transphobic attempt to do anything.

As a lgbtqia+ community member, I get reclaiming the word but yeah it is derogatory and I still don't like it so I don't use it. Not everything is transphobic, and when I was fighting for the right to get married to my person - it was for equality not better than. It was probably a sincere question and it says a lot more about you that your first response is to go on the offense than it does about the person who took the time to seek understanding.
