Since Canada is here (and kind of mad at me) am I supposed to try to use French in Montreal or not? Sources are conflicting on which will earn me more disdain.

East of Blvd St Laurent definitely start with a bonjour. West part of the island is more English but a Bonjour never hurts. If you're actually in the "West Island " use whatever you want. Most Anglo part of Montréal

Absolutely. Even if your French is bad, try and speak. Most people will eventually naturally switch to English when they see you're struggling but it will be appreciated

It depends where you are in the city and neighborhoods. Always try French as a courtesy and if you are bad at it hopefully somebody will come to your rescue.

I went to Montreal twice and stayed in Quartier Latin both times. The first time I went I was pleasantly surprised there was literally English everywhere. The only thing is, be respectful and start your conversation with "Bonjour-Hi." If you only say "Hi" that might be rude. Also both times I went people were super nice to me
