I am named after a Spanish love song. My Mexican grandmother and mom loved the song…they always requested it at Mexican restaurants who had a mariachi band. They told the band it was my name and this 5-15 year old got serenaded by 40+ year old men. Loved mom and grantabd understood they loved the song but did they have to say it was my name?

I’m sorry you had to go through that as a child - not only the forcing to participate, but also the spanking for being “ungrateful”. Here in Mexico it’s common for families to sing happy birthday(our Mexican version) and then, after blowing out the candles, the birthday person is encouraged to take a bite off the cake and the people by her/his side usually push birthday person’s face onto the cake quite forcefully. That’s something that really embarrasses and upsets the birthday person and still it keeps being done.
