The plain ones are meant to counteract the effects of copious alcohol intake, so taste is no issue. The nice ones contain raisins, sugared fruit bits, currants, maybe some finely chopped apple (single or a mix), with maybe cinnamon and vanilla to add flavour. A drop or two of rum doesn't hurt too.

I wasn’t a fan. If I’m going to eat fried dough, it needs to have a higher powdered sugar to dough ratio, like beignets from Cafe du Monde in NOLA.
