Hats off to Charlie, a caller into James O’B’s show on LBC. Thanks to him, I now know that land is a lot more expensive in 2024 than it was in 1984. I am shocked by that revelation. Why shouldn’t a farming estate worth £4.5M be transferred to him exempt of inheritance tax? It’s outrageous, as he only earns £30 grand a year. If he sold it and lived off the interest even after taxes he would earn over £100,000 a year. He could be lying on a beach, earning 20% Still I am just a lefty wokist.

He said it’s a bit wrong going to parliament and pleading poverty and then getting a first class ticket to the protest. Wonder how much that was at peak time?

7 小時內	richard_isle_ely	If my wife and I own a shoe factory worth £10mil and I’m dying, my family will have to pay 40% tax. I sell it and buy a £10mil farm and now my family have to pay just 20% tax (on anything over £3mil) Before the changes they wouldn’t have paid ANY tax on my £10mil investment. Farmers are complaining about people like me putting up land prices by land banking, but they also want to make it more attractive by going back.

They were not bothered about tenant farmers either. Rich people just put managers in to farm. 20% of our farmland is companies 30% aristocracy . So when can I claim my additional tax allowance? Do I get to pay 20% IHT no a modest house is now more than my kids will pay 40%

And yet … farmers have taken subsidies all over the place and have very often, at the same time, been very poor guardians of the countryside. The farming system needs to change but probably not like this.

20 小時內	Kav kav_6kav_6	I think they should be able to afford a morgatage on there farms. It's insanely unprofitable currently. Many of them had only the tax loophole left.

The asset is the land not the price of it something this generation just cannot get their heads around. People comment on farming but really don’t understand the mentality of farming…it’s not about the £’s.
