I was at the clinic and the doctor asked about my medical allergy. Then she asked, "What will happen if you take this medication?" I personally do not think that knowledge is necessary or useful. She just needs to know I cannot take that medication and give me others. I am amused. Is there a reason?

Yes we need to know what kind of allergic reaction you have. Some people have anaphylaxis and will die, some people’s tummies will huwt 🥺 other medications can have cross reactivity so I need to know if you’ll die or just be uncomfortable.

"I'm allergic to Benadryl, it makes me really sleepy" "I'm allergic to Ventolin, it makes my heart race" "I'm allergic to morphine, it made me nauseous" We have to determine if you actually have an allergy, or if the medication just wasn't explained to you properly

Also, something like 70-80% of people who are diagnosed with a penicillin allergy that’s rash only in childhood are discovered NOT to be allergic as adults when formally tested. The goal is to separate allergy from side effects and actually treat you properly for whatever the issue is.

However, should your reaction be minor, other similar meds are deemed safe (we see this a lot with antibiotics, see attached chart) - Having a complete understanding of your patient is so important; if you ever wonder why certain info is being asked, feel empowered to ask your doc why! If you don’t, it may be time for a new doc.
