I've noticed that I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with how some Christians use military language and metaphors (think "army of God", "soldier for Christ", "going to war for Christ", etc ), but I'm also fully aware that the Bible does use some of that language. I'm interested in digging in a little deeper on the topic. Can anyone recommend any well-researched books that discuss this metaphoric militaristic language and how we Christians should understand its scriptural use?

2 小時內	James Earley pj_earley	Andrew, I'm not sure re: books handling the scriptural references in depth, but Alan Kreider's early church work is a solid starting point on later developments imo. Also, Jean-Michael Hornus's "It is Not Lawful For Me to Fight."

18 小時內	Chris Branscome chrisbranscome	I have no books to recommend, but my read on the Biblical language of militaristic metaphors is that they are typically referring to making war against sin, temptations, and Satan. Yes, there was a lot of actual war in the OT but those wars were usually part of God’s bug picture plan to defeat death and evil. Where those metaphors are applied to us in scripture they refer to the defeat of evil, not defeating other humans, including our “enemies.”
