Not as easy as one might think! It was published in three volumes, due to paper shortages and cost concerns. Tolkien chunked into 6 books, each with a distinct story. And in his mind it was all one book and needed to be considered in its entirety. Perhaps . . . one book to bring them all, and in Middle-earth bind them?
