I'm on year 7 as a classroom teacher and I have not grown fonder or more confident of being a part of this profession. If anything, I feel like becoming a teacher was the biggest mistake of my entire life and that I've wasted my best years on this

As a teacher of 25+ years,I can assure you that it isn’t you! The job has changed because the political climate has changed … and student behaviors have changed … because society, in general, has role modeled and accepted poor adult behavior. You have sooo many great years ahead - there is always time to choose a different path!

I’ve been teaching for what will be my 36th year. There were so many years I wanted to quit . Here are a few bits of advice; as many have said , get out before it’s too late. IF you are in a city where it eventually pays a decent salary, you’ll get to a point where you’ll feel financially , you can’t leave. You’re vested in pension, you’ll ask “ where will I make an equal salary? “ I’m a certain age, where will I go?” I have a family, I cant quit.” So get out while you’re young enough . Next..

Second, change schools , districts or neighborhoods. I’ve been in the same building all my career. In retrospect, I should have tried other schools. Many times, it’s shitty admin or colleagues that makes it difficult. My years were better with admin that were human and stood by their teachers. So go find it, and don’t wait for it to come to you. If after trying a new place, if you haven’t already, then I’d say , move on. Good luck .
