Australia is looking to ban social media for children under 16 - even for pre-existing accounts and those with parental consent.
If passed, social media platforms such as Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, Bytedance’s TikTok and Elon Musk’s X and Snapchat would face fines of up to A$49.5 million for systemic breaches.
Australia also plans to trial an age-verification system that may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off. https://cna.asia/4fXQ3xA
