I’ve been dying to talk about this since I saw Wicked a few weeks ago. The choice at the beginning of the film to show Elphaba as darker, with a bigger nose, pointy teeth, and talon nails in all the propaganda material the Wizard puts around munchkinland was brilliant. It gave minstrel vibes, and showed Chu got the deep implications of having a Black woman play the role and how she was vilified.
