I can't wrap my head around the fact that over half of American *adults* are below 6th grade reading level. I reached 12th grade reading level by 4th grade. Not saying that to act superior - it just baffles me.

I get what you’re saying - but you didn’t reach 12th grade reading level at 4th grade lmao A 10 year old simply does not have the same cognitive or comprehension ability as a 17/18 year old. Your brain needs puberty before it’s even able to get 1/2 way there. You maybe *read* those types of books, but you didn’t comprehend them at a 12th grade level

The fact of defunding education, overburdening teachers with duties other than teaching, and parents not reading to their kids have impacted our children and their reading levels. Sticking a kid in front of an iPad does not substitute the effectiveness of being read too at an early age.

It’s our democrat run school system that rewards bad behavior and pushes kids through without learning anything

It is baffling to say the least. It is frightening and sad as well. My children both read above grade level throughout school and still read daily, for information, for entertainment, for fun. I was taught that 1st through 4th grade was meant to be used to learn to read and that from 5th grade on was to read to learn. Guess we jumped off of the wagon somewhere. So sad.

My now 10th grader tested at college level reading last year so they stopped testing him for literacy and instead gave him SAT type questions to prep him for that.

Everyone's brains are a little different. Some people can do huge math problems in their head, some people rely on fingers to keep up with basic math. Same with anything else, not everyone can do what another can.

Same here, college level in 9th grade. It's appalling.
