I'm hoping my sums are correct, feel free to correct me if they're not. All figures are based on figures from Google and my calculator app. Jeremy Clarkson owns 1,000 acres of farmland. Currently, farmland has an average price of £11,300 per acre. This means when Clarkson (who's worth £55.8m) kicks the bucket, his heirs will have 10 years to pay £226,000 in inheritance tax on the farmland. I'm not seeing the problem here, beyond rich people not wanting to pay taxes.

He is in a tiny minority of farmers that could shoulder the IHT burden. Also you have just valued the land only. Now factor in the value of the farmhouse and outbuildings, then all the farm machinery, probably going to double the value. So that’s paying over £50k a year in death duties, which is typically more than the income of a typical farmer with 1,000 acres these days….

But I do feel the £1milllion + trust allowances limit which means less than 250 acres in most of England is low. Should there be a 20% or even 40% IHT in bigger estates? Yes. But at a higher limit. It feels a bit loke the winter payment fuel. Someone hasn’t estimated the impact correctly.
