Unpopular opinion: Driving my 30 year old truck saves me more money and is better for the planet than buying an EV. I can buy tankers of gasoline and not spend as much as a new EV would cost and the amount of emissions I generate is less than what it take to produce a new vehicle

This isn’t an unpopular opinion, I love my EV but I don’t think it’s always the right decision for everyone. If you’re not driving a TON, then an older used vehicle will be better economically and environmentally and keeps them on the road rather than getting trashed. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle though, EVs are much more appealing for a variety of reasons, BUT, not for everyone. Some people will still need gas or hybrid vehicles for their purposes and that’s okay.

EV co2 break even point is around 35k miles. I save about $1100 in gas for every 10k miles I drive. They’re not for everyone but certainly the right choice for more people than realize it.

Well, my grandfather saves way more money than you and your 30-year-old truck, because he’s been dead for 40 years. That is roughly the same logic that you are using in your argument. In five years, my EV has saved about $13,500 in money NOT spent on gas, and that includes the money spent charging the car. Before we’re done with it, we will have recouped the entire purchase price of the car having spent what we would’ve spent covering the same miles in a car that gets 30 miles per gallon.

If you drive an ICE vehicle for more than 20k miles, you produce more emissions than what it cost to make an EV.

Aside from emissions: • EVs cost 40–50% less per mile to power. • EVs save 25–30% on servicing (fewer moving parts); efficient for high-mileage (60,000+ miles annually). • EVs are better for short-to-medium routes with charging access; parity for long-haul likely by 2030 as range improves. • Subsidies and carbon taxes favour EVs; stricter emissions laws increase ICE costs. • ICE trucks will lose value faster as bans approach; EVs likely to retain value longer.

You are correct. Never buy an EV. The person looking to buy a car however who does not have one should buy an EV however. The person whose car has just broken down and requires large amounts of repairs may find it justifiable to buy an EV as well.

An opinion is just that .. an opinion, you are allowed to have one.
