I love this post. I too bought a bookstore. I am happier than ever, but it has absolutely nothing to do with wealth. I am following so that I can hopefully learn along with you.

I know the owner of our local used bookstore. Best ways to stay afloat: also sell a small selection of new books (and order any new book a customer wants), sell bookish gifts up front, become part of the community by hosting events: book clubs, local authors, silent reading, kids’ events, etc,

Based on all the hallmark movies I’m pretty sure you just wait for a big city guy/gal to show up right before Christmas and fall in love with you, and then magically all of your problems just disappear and you live happily ever after.

I love the concept of a blind date with a book.

One of the second hand bookstores in my city does little quiz things and then sends you a surprise box of books based upon your interests and what you’ve already read. It’s not too expensive and is a fun way to be sent books that might not be something you’d originally thought of.

Idk where you’re from. But in Argentina I’ve seen many that slap a second revenue stream onto their cash flow by opening a specialty coffee window, hosting events, silent reading club, some jazz band night.

I have a few small bookshops I frequently order from only because they have relationships with their local authors. Like if i want a stephen graham jones book i always buy from boulder book shop. Or chuck wendig is doylestown. Ill pay a lot more for a sticker or inscription or simply do it just because the author asks us to :)

This is my dream set up…. I always felt like I had to be a hobby store bc I can’t see how it would make anyone ever
